The Accent Wall Done Right

I’ve been on a color roll for all of 2011! Today, let’s take a look at the accent wall. Color is generally the most intimidating design issue that homeowners encounter. Especially wall color and especially saturated wall color or pattern combined with color.
I find that a homeowner will often fall in love with a particular color but can shy away from committing to it in a big way. The accent wall can become a bit of a cop out. However, there are circumstances in which an accent wall is the perfect solution.
Some things to consider when contemplating an accent wall:
  • Accent walls are by definition a highlight. Do use an accent wall to emphasize a particular feature of a room. It can be an architectural feature like a fireplace or something that differentiates the particular wall from the others in the room such as heavy trim, built-ins or even a bar area.
  • Nothing interesting going in the room architecturally? Do highlight another feature such as a headboard or a focal point piece of furniture such as a buffet in a dining room or fabulous bookcase in a study or library.
  • Don’t be random. Be certain the accent wall fits in with the overall design of the room. If you wonder why an accent wall is there, it may not be the best use of color in the space.
If you are still loving the idea of an accent wall, don’t limit yourself to paint. Accent walls can be a great way to interject pattern and even texture into your design scheme. Add pattern with wallpaper or a paint treatment.
Step out of your comfort zone! Color and pattern can add extra life and dimension to our homes. In the right situation, an accent wall can be just the ticket.

  1. Thanks for the article. I just mentioned accent walls as one of 5 ways to update a space for under $100. Read the other tips on my site: http://wp.me/p2cGnq-xw

  2. Any chance you know the colors on pic #4. Thats exactly what Im looking for!

    • Misti – I don’t know the exact color. If you are dealing with taupey neutrals (as that photo appears to be!), you might consider Sherwin Williams Latte (SW 6108) or one shade darker Hopsack (SW 6109). Hope this helps – thanks for reading! Lisa

  3. Thank you!!!
